I know people who permit fear to control their behaviour and choices. It is sometimes easier to observe this kind of behaviour in other people and sense it for what it is than to recognize the same thing in oneself. Dissolving fear is a process. It requires you acknowledge reasons for your fear and be willing to explore and confront them. As a person learns what it means to be grounded in the moment, that is, to be present, that person views his conditions as grounded in that moment. Fear develops based on possibilities that have not yet occurred. Many possibilities are always options. No particular outcome is carved in stone. Discipline the mind. Changing your thoughts changes your perception and how you ground yourself in the now.

Liara,

Welcome to OBV, and thanks for the comment!

I think people do get overwhelmed, especially when fear is involved. Breaking things down to components help make it less overwhelming and more manageable.

Your systematic way of going about self-reflection is inspiring. Many times, when people face an obstacle, they are unsure how to re-orient and get over it. You kindly encourage people to do things in stages, to acknowledge what is not working, to face their fears and work through their feelings in ways that make sense to them. It is a stage-by-stage process that reflects a phase of a learning curve. Everything happens at exactly the right moment--in the now.

Hi Chris,

Aha, that's a great point! The present challenges are just triggers, not really the cause of the fear -- the fear was already inside. So whatever triggers it to surface is really doing you a favor, though it may not feel like it, because it's letting you know that there's an underlying fear. Once you see it, then you can start thinking about how to heal it.

A great insight, Chris!

Thanks for this Ari. One thing I've noticed as well is that when we experience a fear that seems to be related to a specific aspect of our lives (e.g., getting your accounting right), it's a fear that's actually in the background no matter what we're doing. It sounds like for you it's a nagging sense that "I can't do it right." Once we see that the same fear is all over our lives, that actually helps us see that it has nothing to do with our present circumstances and to move beyond it.

Robert,

Thanks for the bits from Tolle. That's very true.

Indeed, I have many intentions for this year. We'll see how it turns out.

Eckhart Tolle has a chapter on surrender in his book The Power of Now that I felt very helpful. Fear is about the past and future, if we can stay present, without worry and find out our challenges without any fears. We can start working on them! This article is very true and revealing.
Thanks for the insight Ari.

And happy new year to you too. I believe you have many goals in the coming years. Don't give up on it. Do your best today! A quote for you... dream like you will live forever, live like you will die tomorrow - James Dean.

All the best!
Robert

Hi Ross,

Indeed, fear is a friend disguised as a foe -- they play a vital part in telling us where our weaknesses are. By learning to make friends with your fear, you can really speed up your growth.
